Our Community-Based Road Safety Mobilization Campaign kick-off in Gboko.Substantial opportunities and scope exist for creating a safer road environment through sustained introduction of safe community programs at the local levels by providing wider public participation and awareness,as well as making necessary changes in behavior and environment. The community itself,by virtue of its expertise, enthusiasm, resources,and network,can greatly enhance existing programs and even devise new ways of tackling safety problems. About 30%–40%of crashes and injuries could be reduced through such programs. The opportunities for community road safety cover a wide area, which includes a definition of community road safety and explanation of its role, outline of the programs, essential structures required for sustained programs and the other issues viz good practices, integration of community road safety and other aspects of local government activities, and wider communication and use of local media.
This expected situation may be aggravated if road safety measures are not taken in an inclusive manner, given the current road safety issues in rural areas, even if the project improves the roads to best geometrically safe standards: (i) almost all motor/vehicle drivers do not possess a driver’s license; (ii) lack of education on road safety, safe driving techniques, road signs and safety provisions, traffic rules, first aid, personal safety,and safety of others; (iii) non-negligible illiteracy rate; (iv) lack of skills, resources, and willingness of traffic police on effective enforcement, and emanate to introduction of Free Driving Training Skills for Youths in Gboko.
Safety Assessment on Road Infrastructure Safety in Gboko
We participated in the fourth session of our capacity development series on an introduction to Star Ratings for Schools methodology The Program, launched in 2019, trains young road safety leaders to assess and rate zones or roads around schools, universities, and other educational institutions. This session is directly linked to the call in our Global Youth Statement for Road Safety on:
“Roads that do not kill our dreams”
Protect vulnerable road users, children, and youth on their way to get an education. Stop funding and building anything less than 3-star roads
Students’ Orientation on Safety
The orientation unveiled road safety ABC for students as one potential way of reducing the number of deaths or injuries amongst young road users. Organizations like ours is interested in road safety and continually looking for new and innovative ways to improve road safety knowledge and promote safe/healthy environment as well as responsible road use for students.
Youth Empowerment Through Driving Skills
Given education to youths is an important area who have strength of my initiative rests in my commitment to improving education, training and job prospects of young people and delivering on this project. With this development, I can leverage a vast network of resources, knowledge and partnerships and achieve a long-lasting, positive impact on the lives of young people in Gboko. I believed that, young people voice are vocal voices with ability and actions to change.
The specific issue in my community among young people are high level of poverty, high level of unemployment and non-availability of quality driving training skills. Providing employment opportunity and intensive driving skills is as a live changer activist, through Free Driving Training Skills to youths.
The project wants to train and empower 2000 youths in driving skills with economic value, thereby acquiring driver’s license and learners permits for them to sustain themselves and their families. We truly believe, from experience, this will help curb unemployment, poverty, and social vices, currently very high, in the Gboko town. This will also greatly reduce young men economic dependence on mischievous tougery for survival. The project targeted group are young people from 18-30 years range, graduates and non-graduates, both (sex).
